Google Talk

I find Google amazing. Google has its different way to do things. I jus loved the concept of gtalk, gmail, Google Personalized Home , Google Earth and other services.

I have been using gtalk for quite sometime. Geeks did it before but I just discovered it only today. In the Settings >Connection>Start monitor one can find the IP of the other user. Most of softwares can lead you to the IP of server but you can use Gtalk as a software to recognize the end system on the local network.... Wow just great. The voice quality is very good. You will find that the voice call works even when the gtalk is reconnecting...

Jus amazed by this feature I was looking for the details about the other key Fields on the control monitor. I found few sites which explored the other hidden features of Gtalk. One of them is http://www.customizetalk.com . The sites provides information on tips and tricks, registry tweaks &c related to gtalk.

Gtalk uses standard Jabber/XMPP protocol for authentication, presence and messaging. The service is hosted at talk.google.com on port 5222. For voice calls gtalk supports custom XMPP based signaling protocol and peer-to-peer communication mechanism. Currently gtalk offers messenger for Windows NT/XP but the Linux and MAC user can configure their client (like GAIM) which supports XMPP/Jabber protocol.

Working on the lines of Jabber Gtalk aims to provide service choice to the user. ie an user using gtalk can communicate(IM/VOIP) with other clients (like Yahoo,MSN &c) without subscribing the services of other client (jus like our existing email services).
